The phrase should be taken for what it is: a community testimony, not a certified official price list. The value of the thread lies not in replacing Hetzner's official communication, but in making visible the reaction of those who, for years, have built projects, labs, staging environments, and production infrastructures based on a simple premise: Hetzner was inexpensive, worked well, and allowed even small businesses, professionals, developers, and system administrators to access quality server resources without having to deal with the budgets of the big hyperscalers.
Why is Hetzner not just any provider?
Hetzner is a German supplier founded in 1997 and has become one of the most recognisable references for the last twenty years Dedicated Servers, cloud and virtualized infrastructures. Its reputation has been built on a price/performance ratio that is hard to match: solid hardware, adequate connectivity, pragmatic support, essential but functional panels, no unnecessary superstructure.
For a huge segment of the European hosting and systems ecosystem, especially for companies without proprietary data centers, Hetzner was more than just a supplier: it was a benchmark. Even when purchasing directly from Hetzner, it was used as a benchmark. If a dedicated server, VPS, or storage node cost significantly more than Hetzner, it was necessary to clearly explain why: managed support, superior redundancy, Italian localization, specific compliance, additional services, application support. Hetzner represented the “naked price” of efficient infrastructure.
This is why its increase weighs more heavily than others. If the increase is made by an already expensive provider, the market tends to interpret it as a margin adjustment. However, if the increase is made by a historically low-cost operator, known for operating with industrial efficiency and compressed margins, the message is different: The real cost of hardware has shifted. And when the real cost of hardware shifts, sooner or later the entire supply chain shifts.

Hetzner has published an official announcement regarding the standardization and price adjustment of server products, effective June 15, 2026. In the press release, the company explains that the new structure serves to simplify model comparisons and standardize configurations, eliminating many individual RAM and storage combinations. But the most important step is another: Hetzner openly speaks of "ongoing challenges in the hardware procurement market" and "massive increases in procurement costs." In other words, the problem is presented not as a simple commercial choice, but as a consequence of the difficulty and cost of hardware procurement.
Infrastructure providers, data centers, don't just spin servers out of thin air. They need to purchase CPUs, motherboards, ECC RAM, enterprise SSDs, controllers, chassis, power supplies, network cards, switches, cooling systems, and spare parts. They must plan capacity, inventory, replacements, warranties, logistics, and delivery times. When purchasing costs rise sharply, the provider can absorb them for a while, reducing margins or slowing down investments. But if the pressure continues, the price increase is passed on to the end customer. Hetzner points out that existing contracts maintain their terms, while the impact affects new orders, rescales, and future products.
AI doesn't just buy GPUs: it buys the entire server.
When it comes to AI-driven price hikes, many immediately think of NVIDIA GPUs. Understandably, they're the visible symbol of the AI boom. But it would be simplistic to think the problem ends there. AI is absorbing entire supply chains. A training or inference cluster isn't just made up of accelerators: it requires massive amounts of high-bandwidth memory, high-capacity DDR5 and RDIMM RAM, enterprise NVMe SSDs, ultra-high-performance networking, redundant power supplies, more sophisticated cooling, and high-density racks.
Memory is one of the most obvious bottlenecks. IDC described a global shortage situation, with demand for AI datacenters exceeding supply and a reallocation of manufacturing capacity towards HBM, high-capacity DDR5, and more profitable AI solutions. This means that the industrial capacity that previously more predictably powered PCs, traditional servers, SSDs, and enterprise components is now being contested by hyperscalers and large AI platform builders.

RAM, SSDs, and Enterprise Components: The Invisible Price Increase
The most dangerous aspect of this phase is that the price increase doesn't affect a single, easily avoidable component. If only the cost of GPUs were to rise, a traditional provider might say, "I don't sell server AI, so it doesn't concern me." But when DRAM, NAND, enterprise SSDs, and server modules increase, the problem becomes systemic. A VPS runs on physical nodes full of RAM. A high-performance database requires memory, fast storage, and reliable I/O. Modern hosting uses NVMe SSDs, cache, replication, backup, snapshots, monitoring, and spare parts. All elements depend on the same supply chain.
According to several market analyses, DRAM and NAND prices have seen significant increases between 2025 and 2026. Network World, citing Counterpoint and Gartner, reported significant increases in DDR5 modules and forecasts further growth for DRAM in 2026. Axios even linked the rising prices of common flash drives to demand for AI datacenter storage, pointing out that the phenomenon is moving beyond the enterprise perimeter and starting to be seen in consumer products that for years were expected to become increasingly cheaper.
Why a cheap provider feels the pressure first
A common mistake is to think that a low-cost provider always has room to keep prices low. In reality, the opposite is often true. Those who have built their competitive edge on efficiency and aggressive pricing operate with lower unit margins. They can compensate with volumes, automation, standardization, smart purchasing, and very streamlined processes. But precisely because the starting price is low, when the cost of hardware increases by 30, 50, 80, or 100 percent on certain components, there isn't much cushion to fill.
Hetzner became famous for being able to sell real infrastructure at prices that many competitors thought impossible. This has created tremendous expectations. Many users have been thinking for years about a sort of normality: powerful servers for a few dozen euros, frequent upgrades, affordable storage, and cloud deployment without any particular budget concerns. But that normality was the result of a favorable hardware environment. If that environment changes, the price that seemed "natural" will reveal itself for what it was: the result of a historical period of relative abundance.
The price increase will also affect other providers
The most uncomfortable conclusion is also the most realistic: These increases will not remain confined to Hetzner. If a historically cost-effective, efficient, and price-conscious provider has come to publish these types of price lists, it's reasonable to expect the rest of the industry to move in the same direction. Perhaps at different times, with different formulas, with price increases disguised as new product lines, setup fees, traffic limits, backup costs, separate storage, licensing, support, or reduced included resources.
More expensive providers have higher margins, but they still purchase hardware within the same global market. Hosting companies that rent servers from third parties will have to renew contracts, replace machines, expand clusters, purchase RAM and SSDs, and pay for power, licenses, connectivity, and staff. Those who haven't yet adjusted their prices may do so during the next infrastructure renewal cycle. Those who purchased inventory at previous conditions will be able to hold out longer, but not indefinitely.
End customers often only see the monthly fee and tend to think that a "ready-to-run" server costs next to nothing. But a serious infrastructure involves depreciation, replacement, breakdowns, spare parts, maintenance, security, networking, backup, monitoring, compliance, and human support. If the price of iron explodes, everything that relies on iron becomes more expensive. AI, in this sense, is imposing an indirect tax on the entire IT world: even those who don't use generative models end up competing with the same saturated supply chain.
How many will be able to afford it?
The most bitter question is the one that emerges between the lines: how many users will actually have the financial means to afford costs that were affordable until yesterday and now seem pure madness? For a large company, a price increase of a few hundred euros per month can be annoying but manageable. For a small agency, a freelancer, a startup, an open source project, a community, a personal lab, or a small e-commerce site, the difference between 30 euros and 100 euros per month isn't psychological: it's substantial.
Over the past few years, we've become accustomed to the idea that infrastructure and bandwidth are virtually unlimited commodities. We've proliferated environments, staging, microservices, containers, backups, replications, dashboards, and temporary instances. We've often designed with abundance because abundance was cheap. Now the situation is changing. A key word that had almost disappeared from cloud marketing is once again central: efficiency. We will need to size better, turn off what is not needed, consolidate workloads, use cache intelligently, optimize databases, reduce waste, and choose storage and RAM more carefully.
And no, the blame isn't solely Hetzner's. It would be convenient to blame the provider, as if a price list emerged in isolation from an arbitrary decision. But the picture is much bigger: the global race for AI is devouring components, production capacity, and industrial priorities. The larger operators buy first, better, and with stronger contracts. The others suffer. In this scenario, Hetzner is, if anything, the thermometer: if the temperature rises there, it means the entire industry is already at fever pitch.
The end of “obvious” infrastructure
For those working in hosting, systems engineering, web development, and infrastructure management, the message is crystal clear: yesterday's low prices are no longer a guarantee for tomorrow. Unsustainable offerings will be corrected. Margins will be protected. Truly managed services will have to better explain their value. Customers will have to be educated about a less comfortable reality: performance, reliability, and hardware availability come at a cost, and that cost today is much more volatile than it was a few years ago.
Hetzner, precisely because for twenty years it has been perceived as the symbol of affordable yet reliable European infrastructure, highlights this transition better than anyone else. If Hetzner's price rises, it's not just news about Hetzner. It's a warning to the entire market: iron ore is becoming more expensive again, the supply chain is under pressure, and AI is rewriting the base price of IT. At this point, the only question left is how many projects, how many small businesses, and how many users will be able to adapt to a normality that until yesterday seemed unthinkable.
